Using Medications for Fact Finding
Let’s say you’re in front of a client and they said they have had no health conditions.
You look at their medications, they’re on Warfarin.
Are they thinning their blood for fun?  No! They omitted something!  Turns out they had a stroke a year ago and didn’t tell you.
You may have already run into this very scenario.
Medications are another layer of information for you to help underwrite your client.
As we’ve previously discussed, medications themselves can impact underwriting.  However, they also give some insight into uninsurable conditions and rated conditions.
Â
Recommended Action Steps
-
Always ask what the medication was prescribed to treat
-
Make a note of conditions that come up during this element of fact finding
-
Check the carrier’s underwriting guide and applications for more information about the conditions themselves and medications.
Â
Note, there are tools that help you with this, like a Best Plan Pro.  However, all of these steps can be done without any additional tools (although that may take longer).
